More than 300 community members, Adventist HealthCare leaders and elected officials gathered at the site of the new hospital in White Oak on March 7 to celebrate the historic groundbreaking of the new Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital, set to open in early 2019.

This celebration followed shortly after the Maryland HealthCare Commission approved in late 2015 the Certificate of Need (CON) application to relocate Washington Adventist Hospital to the White Oak area of Montgomery County. The new hospital is part of a longstanding plan to expand access to care in the region, which includes keeping several key healthcare services at the current Takoma Park campus.

Erik Wangsness, president of Washington Adventist Hospital, welcomed guests to the event, which was held on the 48-acre property near the intersection of Plum Orchard Drive and Cherry Hill Road that will become the state-of-the-art medical campus. He thanked elected officials, community leaders, hospital employees and physicians who helped make this project a possibility. Other leaders of both Adventist HealthCare and the community spoke, including Terry Forde, president and CEO of Adventist HealthCare.

Elected officials, including U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes and Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett, attended to show their continued support for this next stage in Adventist HealthCare’s ongoing commitment to serve the community. They highlighted how the new hospital will improve the quality of life for their constituents.

The Washington Adventist Hospital Foundation also recognized the deep commitment of our Founding Partners to this project. Physician donors, as well as community members showed their support by donating to the Capital Campaign to build this state-of-the-art facility. The Foundation has developed wonderful opportunities for those who want to join the Capital Campaign and we already have a growing list of those who have stepped forward.

Nicholas Cacciabeve, MD, section chair for Pathology at Washington Adventist Hospital spoke about his excitement about the new facility and his deep commitment to Washington Adventist Hospital.
